Project 10
Global society orientation among German Turks

Issue

Based on an understanding of world society informed by system theory, the democracy-related orientations of German Turks will be reconstructed. How does this group see itself when it comes to political participation? The results of the study will offer stimulating insights for citizenship education programmes.

Project Description

Based on their multiple cultural contacts, people with a migration background are directly affected by the transnational dimension of contemporary politics and the consequences of globalization. However, the experiences associated to this setting do not always lead to a cosmopolitan and democratic attitude but, just as well, to political abstinence or nationalist attitudes. Against this background, subjective and objective processes of social inclusion or exclusion as well as convictions concerning aspects of religion and human rights will be examined. The study reflects on the orientations concerning global society, on the self-understanding and political participation of this largest group of Germans with an immigration background. In cooperation with stakeholders, conclusions will be drawn with regard to concepts and programmes of citizenship education and will stimulate the development of new educational offers.
